A Personal Interpretation of The Five Reiki Principles
The concept of the Five Principles dates back in China 2500 years ago, but the truth it brings to us is still valid today. Let’s attempt now to interpret these principles in a contemporary way, a way fit to the 21st century.
Kyo dake wa
Translations: Just for today or First we say
Meaning: Here and now
Comments: Our human mind may be discouraged when faced with an enormous challenge like being committed to doing something or to become somebody, for the rest of our life. When we break down this challenge into many small ones, like doing something only today, the task does not seem so scary. We have to take a day at a time and focus on our goals for that day, without giving a thought to the lifetime hard work lying ahead of us.
Ikaruna
Translations: Do not anger or Don’t get angry, Thou shall not anger, I will not be angry, I will let go of anger
Meaning: Do not direct negative energies to others or to yourself
Comments: The main idea of these principles is not to harm others, in any way, through our thoughts, words, or actions. We also have the same duty towards ourselves.
Shinpai suna
Translations: Do not worry or Don’t be anxious, Thou shall not worry, I will not worry, I will let go of worry
Meaning: Do not allow any negative emotion to destroy yourself
Comments: Negative emotions from stress or panic are the response patterns to a situation we do not control, whenever we foresee an undesirable outcome. We have to keep our faith in the Universe, understand that the only things we can really control are our emotions and transform all negative emotions in their positive correspondent.
Kansha shite
Translations: Work hard, Study diligently, Devote yourself to your work, Earn thy livelihood with honest labor, I will do my work honestly, Be diligent in your business, endeavour your work
Meaning: Be grateful for what you are and for what the Universe offered to you

Comments: Gratitude is the main source of joy, if we chose to be thankful for what we have, instead of having a negative reaction to what we can’t get. By seeing the glass half- full, we become more optimistic and joyous. Thanking our parents, teachers, and elders for their love, care, and teachings is just a small part of this gratitude.
Gyo wo hage me
Translations: Be grateful or Show appreciation, Thou shall be grateful for the many blessings, I will give thanks for my many blessings, I will count my many blessings, Express your thanks, Show gratitude to every living thing, Honor your parents, teachers, and elders
Meaning: Make a continuous and conscious effort to improve yourself in all areas of your life.
Comments: In a general way, we have to work hard to improve ourselves in the way we think, the way we feel, the way we communicate, and the way we act. In a more particular way, we have to study hard in school, or to work diligently in the workplace.
Hito ni shinsetsu ni
Translations: Be kind to people, Be kind to others, Be kind to thy neighbors, I will be kind to every living thing, I will be kind to every living creature, Show compassion to every living thing
Meaning: Act always in a positive way towards others
Comments: From being polite or strictly observing the etiquette, to being loving and compassionate towards all creatures, there is a full range of positive reactions to anything and anybody we interact with. We also have the duty to be kind to ourselves. This principle goes a little bit further than the first one, suggesting only not to harm ourselves or the people and the creatures that cross our path.
All these interpretations make things even more complicated, because not only do we have to work hard in order to improve our behavior in the four aspects mentioned in Gokai, but we also have to strive to achieve perfection in all the aspects of our personality. This is the only way to attain the state of satori.
I would summarize the teaching of the five Reiki Principles in two lines:
Take care of yourself and take care of others.
Don’t hurt yourself and don’t hurt others.
