FAQ about Reiki healing

What is Reiki?

The word Reiki (pronounced ‘ray-key’) consists of two Japanese Kanji: Rei and Ki. Rei (pronounced ‘ray’) is the Kanji for Universal, but it has also the meaning of spiritual wisdom or consciousness. Ki (pronounced ‘key’) is the Kanji for Life Energy, also called life force or vital energy. Reiki is Japanese for “Universal Life Energy”, or more poetically, “The Light”.

The general meaning of Reiki is the life force inherent in all beings, sentient and insentient. This vital energy permeates everyone and everything.

Reiki is power, light, and love. Reiki transcends the man-made divisions of religion, race, gender, economics, or location.

Reiki is also an Ancient Healing Art rediscovered in Japan at the beginning of the 20th century. Reiki is a gentle, but extremely powerful hands-on method of stress reduction and relaxation, which heals on all levels (physical, mental, emotional and spiritual).

How does Reiki work?

As long as we are alive, Ki (life energy) flows through our body and sustains it by nourishing the cells and organs. When the flow is disrupted, this affects their functioning and can eventually result in disease.

Reiki is a natural healing art. Reiki re-establishes a natural flow of Ki throughout the whole body, which in return enhances and accelerates the body’s innate healing ability. Reiki promotes relaxation while working on the causal level of disease.

Reiki is a non-invasive healing art. Through a series of hand positions either directly on or just above the body, the energy worker allows for the flow of energy through their body. The receiver’s body then draws off the amount of energy that is required. The energy goes to the deeper levels of a person’s being, where all illnesses have their origin. The Reiki energy goes exactly where it is needed most, guided by the subconscious of the client, releases blocked energies, cleanses the body of toxins and re-establishes a state of balance. This way, a Reiki practitioner never needs to diagnose.

Reiki is a holistic healing art. Reiki does not heal any specific problem, but it helps the body to heal itself at all levels.

At physical level Reiki reduces or eliminates pain, relaxes the body and increases its mobility, eliminates migraines and headaches, accelerates healing time, accelerates recovery after surgery, strengthens the immune system. cleanses the body of toxins (including alcohol), increases energy and vitality, helps coping with terminal illnesses, increases the effect of any other treatment.

What happens during a Reiki session?

A typical Reiki session takes 60 minutes, but it can go up to 90 minutes. The client, fully clothed, lies on the treatment table in a low-lighted room while relaxing music plays in the background. Our hands remain in a stationary position, gently on or slightly above the body through a sequence of positions from head to toe, lasting 2-5 minutes each. Sometimes we use the standard hand positions prescribed by the Western schools, other time we prefer to use a more intuitive approach specific to the Japanese schools. The private areas are worked on a few inches above the body. Unlike massage, there is no manipulation of the skin or tissue.

A distant session usually lasts only 30 minutes. The client has only to accept the treatment and to be in a relaxed state, or asleep.

Many individuals report feeling cold, hot or tingly during a session. Most people enter a calm, relaxed state, some may fall asleep. In some cases of acute conditions, pain can diminish or completely vanish. It is different for each person. The Reiki energy works even if nothing special is noticed.

What are the limitations of Reiki?

The same way Life Energy and Love do not have limits, Reiki does not have limitations either. Reiki does not have contraindications or side effects, and is not habit-forming. Reiki can be used in conjunction with any other conventional or alternative therapy and increases their effects.

Reiki is completely safe and perfect for children, as they accept and embrace it unconditionally and do not question its powerful effects.

What is a healing crisis?

After one or a series of Reiki healing sessions, the body starts a healing process at all levels. In some severe cases, this process can result in headaches, dizziness, and very rarely in pain and vomiting. These reactions are different from one person to another. They are just intermediate, temporary steps in the healing process and they indicate that the body is fighting the disease. An example: in order to clear the sinuses, the nose must run. As the popular belief says “It gets worse before it gets better.”

How much Reiki does somebody need?

The amount of Reiki energy somebody needs depends on the extent of the problem and the acceptance level of the person. Each healing session eliminates a layer of the problem. It’s important to remember that, whatever is troubling us, ‘we didn’t get this way overnight’ and we won’t ‘recover overnight’, either. Healing takes commitment and it takes time…

Some guidelines for the number of sessions somebody would need:

  • Acute problems are healed faster than chronic problems. The sooner a problem is treated, the better it is, but it is never too late to heal with Reiki.
  • Single minor problems heal faster than complex problems
  • Young people, especially children, heal faster than the elderly.

From our experience, by the third session the first signs of healing appear. Simple problems may be healed in 5 sessions, twice a week. For more complex problems, 10 to 15 sessions may be needed.

The best use of Reiki is prevention. For maintenance purposes we suggest monthly Reiki sessions.

All men dream: but not equally.
Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity.
But the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dream with open eyes to make it possible.

T.E. Lawrence
(1888-1935)
