Sources of Energy

According to the Chinese medicine, life is created from and sustained by vital energy. There are two types or aspects of energy: pre-natal and post-natal energy. As their names suggest, the pre-natal energy is the energy we have at birth, and the post-natal energy is the energy we gather during our entire life. That’s why these energies are also known as “initial energy” and “gathered energy”.

The pre-natal energy is our primordial energy, the one that ensures the development of the fetus in the womb during the pregnancy period. This energy is a combination of the father sperm’s energy and that of the mother’s egg, as well as the energy provided by the mother to the fetus in the womb. According to the Chinese medicine, this energy is stored in the fetus’s kidneys. Therefore, it is from the kidneys’ energy that the rest of the fetus developed. Whatever remains from this energy is stored in our kidneys for the rest of our lives. In modern times, we call this energy heredity, and we keep it responsible for the similarities between our parents and us.

There is another component of our initial energy and this is a sample of the energy of the Universe at our birth. This is the energy that helps us to come into this world. In astrology, either the Chinese one, or the Western one, we consider that the energies of the planets at our birth are the ones determining our character and personality. Not only the stars, but everything in our environment influences our energy at birth.

In conclusion, our initial energy is composed of our parents’ energies and the energy of our environment at the time and place of our birth.

The post-natal energy is the vital energy produced from the interaction of the “heaven energy” with the “Earth energy”, according to the Chinese medicine. This is a way to say that our main sources of gathered energy are the air and the food.

The lung is the organ that takes the cosmic energy into our body as fresh air, and eliminates waste products in a gaseous state. In most of the ancient languages, air and energy are synonyms. Words like prana (Sanscrit), chi (Chinese), or pneuma (Greek) were used to indicate both energy and air.

The health condition of our lungs is associated with the aspect of our skin. When the air energy is abundant, our skin is radiant and healthy. In case contrary, the skin is dry and wrinkled.

Breathing exercises like the ones practiced in Chi Kung, Tai Chi and Yoga are known to dramatically improve our vital energy and health. In some places of the world this is the only method used to improve health and successfully fight deadly diseases like cancer.

The stomach is the organ that receives food and drinks and transforms them in nutrients. It works closely with the spleen. That nutrient energy is further separated in different types of energy and waste through the small intestine and colon. Kidneys and urinary bladder separate the energy from bodily fluids.

The digestive system is the main source of energy for our daily needs. That’s why increasing the appetite and supplying appropriate food was the method used to strengthen the patient’s body in order to overcome diseases like lung infections (tuberculosis), liver infections and kidney swelling.

When the stomach and spleen are healthy, the person’s flesh is well formed and the lips are full and rich. In the other case, the lips are undernourished and lack luster; this is also associated with lack of taste and appetite.

The heart and circulatory system are responsible for carrying the energy through the body. The quantity and the quality of blood is regulated by the spleen, and the excess blood is stored in the liver. In blood, the Heaven energy is combined with the Earth energy and form the gathered energy.

If the heart and circulatory system are normal, a person’s face is bright and rosy. When the heart has physiological problems, the face become dark and dull, and if it has anatomical problems, the face is yellowish and lacks luster.

This medical thinking was described concisely in a classic Chinese text:

Man is born of the earth
Derive his life from heaven (sky)
Heaven and Earth unite to produce energy
The resultant life is man.

As we can easily see, man lives somewhere between earth and sky. And man too, can be a source of energy. We call this type of energy induced or transferred energy.

We humans do this most of the time unconsciously: mothers hold their babies at their chest, we hold a dying person in our arms in their last moments. We hold our lover and we hug our friends. All these acts are nothing else but a transfer of energy.

A few millennia ago, humans discovered that they can give some of their energy to somebody else in a consciously manner. In different cultures healers, shamans, Chi Kung masters or religious personalities discovered in themselves the ability to help other people. More recently, energy practitioners use different techniques like Reiki, Polarity, Quantum Touch or Therapeutic Touch, to transfer energy to somebody else.

In some cases, the energy practitioners use their own energy, and they need a period of recharging after healing sessions. In other cases, like Reiki, they learn to channel “heaven energy” and they don’t get depleted of energy.

As a conclusion, we have to understand that, from the energetic point of view, the main conditions to remain healthy or to regain health are: correct breathing and adequate nutrition. In cases when this is not enough, energy healers can supply the necessary energy, so that the body can heal itself. We have to remember that this is a temporary solution, and it does not replace the main sources of gathered energy.

All men dream: but not equally.
Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity.
But the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dream with open eyes to make it possible.
